its weird being 18, 19, 20 in 2016 because i remember going into kindergarten and seeing those chunky ass giant computers at the desk and then going through school while technology rapidly develops and graduate in a world where people can have the entire internet and more just in their pocket like idk its so strange to me
sorry to add to the post but I remember in 5th grade when they invented the “smart whiteboard” and my school won one for the library and everyone lost their shit because they were so expensive and I graduated high school last year and by the time I graduated every single classroom had one. Watching technology go from glitchy and expensive to powerful and affordable within less than ten years continues to blow my mind
no but also like owning a flip phone was the Coolest Shit™ and you could take photos(???) and it was like so incredible, and it was all fun and games until you pressed the key for THE INTERNET and you knew you’d be charged so you pressed that cancel key eighty times and prayed to god that he’d take mercy on you…and then iphones became a thing and it was like unreal
#the tech that has come around in the last ten years has been amazing #like just watching us go from vcrs to dvds to downloadable copies
Oh yeah. I remember being 6, and going to the video store to rent Pokemon VHS, and having to rewind them before I returned them. Then at 8 watching Spy Kids 2 on a DVD, and marveling at not needing to rewind a disk. Then Netflix, where you didn’t need to go to a video store? That was amazing.
Now everyone streams, and it’s just something that would have been futuristic to my 5 year old self.

- the slight resistance of inserting cassette and video tapes
- ripping off the strips of holed paper off of dot matrix printer paper
- rolling the wheel on a disposable camera to take another photo
The heaviness and rubber texture of the roller ball in a computer mouse, and the little ring of lint
Unkinking the curly cord of a telephone while you talked
The -peww sound and slowly fading image of a crt monitor turning off, and then running your finger through the static on the dusty glass
The crunch of opening or closing a plastic Disney vhs cover
The sound effects in kidpix
Extending and collapsing metal antennas and using them as magic wands
…God, it is so weird these things aren’t around any more. Cause it’s true, the sensations are so distinct. It’s bizarre to think about missing these tiny relics.
Growing up in internet fandom in the 00s, remembering:
1. ff.net banned NC-17 fics
2. The moment you signed a disclaimer for reading fics that you’re 18 years old when you’re actually 18
3. Trying to keep up with the threads on Yahoo mailing lists
4. Exploring fanfic archives through “Web rings” of fic sites
5. Livejournal: drabbles, ficlets, vignetts, comment fics, lj communities, when OkCupid was funny personality quizzes
6. Learning about society (and social psychology) through Fandom_wank
7. Discovering ships via ship_manifestos: also, words like “plotbunny”, “squee”,” guh”, “squick”, “plotsheep”
8. Yuletide fics is Happy Holidays for EVERYONE- fic recs everywhere
9. Wanting fanfic Awards in the form of icons you can put on your fic site and respecting the fics that had those icons
10. The joy of browsing fics via Del.icio.us (TAG SYSTEMS RULE)

Feeling the warm smooth sides of our first computer monitor in the early 90s to find the knob to manually adjust the colors on the screen (talk about old school)
The electric whine and hum of the elementary school printers as they processed our print requests and spit out miles of matrix paper
The noise that a VHS tape made when it was being rewound
Flipping the cassette around in our hands until we found the right way for it to fit into the receiver so that it would be accepted and wouldn’t get stuck
The Windows 95 start screen intro noise
Every single sound effect for the kitschy screen savers that we downloaded (haunted mansion, flying toaster, baby dance, underwater, Macarena macaroni, etc)
Holding your CD player just right so it wouldn’t skip and rattle the cd inside
The ka-chunk of the VHS player spitting out the videotape, the registering noise as you pushed it back in
Please take a moment to travel back in time with me to 1999. It was a purer, simpler time in which we had just received Episode I and did not yet know how II and III would play out, beyond Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader. It was a time in which it was perfectly acceptable to not only include Duel of the Fates as part of your marching band halftime show, but also to invite the drama department to reenact the lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi.
