im a psychology major and the daughter of a police sergeant. and yes, it is very strange. a lot of officers who have killed in self-defense develop ptsd because of the experience. some even commit suicide. i once met an officer who was involved in a big shoot-out and took down the gunman. he told me he had to take the year off to “get [his] mind straight”. killing someone, even if it’s in self-defense, takes a huge emotional toll on morally healthy people.
