“I was talking to a little girl a couple of years ago and she said she wanted to be Amy Pond.
‘Not the Doctor?’ I asked.
’No, I want to be the boss of the Doctor.’” – steven moffat [the companions]
doctor who
<lyonsheart:
clara was introduced in the 50th year; a season dedicated to establishing the ponds’ departure, the 50th anniversary, and the eleventh doctor’s death
at the end of this year she had to find a role within two out of three of these storylines, which realistically didn’t have room for anything but the pre-established characters, let alone significant development of a companion – something the 50th did miraculously manage to do to an extent; progressing clara’s character slightly, but not hugely because it was only her ninth episode.
criticizing clara’s characterization because she’s not experienced a huge transformation at this point feels like pointing out rose’s development seems incomplete in the middle of season 1. i can’t help but think well of course it fucking does and while i’m not against criticizing the writing, it’s still extremely unfair and illogical in my eyes to compare the actions and development of companions in their final/penultimate stories to that of anything clara’s experiencing now because her story’s not over yet; she’s had half a season
because you can’t just ignore the contextual differences between the way companions are introduced when you’re comparing the development of a character who’s experienced 10 episodes with one who’s experienced over 30
#people are comparing development that took place accross 30 episodes#and expecting clara to have it all and THEN SOME#in less than a season’s worth of episodes#AND THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE#even comparing her to martha and donna is unfair#because their primary development occured in their final episodes#which was their 12th and 13th#still more episodes than clara’s experienced

A biography of Doctor Who’s first producer is to be published next January. Drama and Delight: The Life and Legacy of Verity Lambert is being written by Richard Marson and will be brought out by Miwk Publishing Ltd.
Not only was Lambert the show’s first producer, it was also her first TV programme as a producer, having been poached from commercial rival ABC by drama boss Sydney Newman. At the time, she was also the youngest and only female drama producer at the BBC.
Lambert went on to have a hugely successful and influential career in TV production, becoming a head of drama herself – at Thames Television – and later setting up her own production company. She received an OBE in the 2002 New Year Honours for services to film and television production, and that same year also saw her presented with BAFTA’s Alan Clarke Award for Outstanding Contribution to Television. She died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 71.

They’re doing a Verity biography! Yay this will be really interesting.
positive lady characters meme → martha jones + being friends with other women
Even with Rose! It wasn’t ‘Ugh, this bitch,’ or even ‘Oh great, now she’s back I’ll never have a shot!’
It was, ‘Oh my god, he found you.’
Martha Jones rises above all the petty, jealous crap, and brings everyone up along for the ride.

underappreciated characters meme > A character you’re meant to hate but love instead
Mickey Smith (Doctor Who season one) – I know this is stretching it, but I REALLY HATE
how Mickey was treated in his first few episodes. Even the hero of the show doesn’t care that he might have been killed by aliens, even sympathetic characters call him ‘idiot’ all the time, and we’re supposed to agree? Screw that!
Basically, you deserved a lot better, Mr Smith.

A New Year’s treat for you all: “John Smith And The Common Men”, the 1984/V for Vendetta-inspired comic story that appeared in last month’s DWM.
It’s really good! Here’s the ending.
I did not spend ages scanning this thing in on two seperate scanners (one of which I had to hold the plug in the exact right place for throughout the five-minute scanning process or else it would turn off) for it to get less than three notes.
…Well, apparently I did. But have a Doctor Who comic anyway.
