Arden Cho is leaving Teen Wolf, which marks the third PoC in the same number of weeks leaving a show bc of neglectful storytelling”

#1 is Ricky Whittle, who [was abused by his boss until he finally was written out of the show] and whose character [was executed and left to very graphically bleed out on the mud].

#2 is Nicole Beharie, who [was sidelined from her own show until she finally felt like she had to leave], and her character was killed off with a disgusting and racist “I was only meant to carry you forward” to her white co-lead.

Arden Cho makes #3. She basically put all of her other projects on hold for three years because she never knew when the show was gonna call her for an episode –and they never bothered to wrap the writing around her schedule like they did for white cast-member Dylan O’Brien, who was able to film two movies while Arden had to bend over backwards for the show.

[Caption: screencap of an Intagram comment left by @arden_cho: “@shermandanielles: also less than 1% of my time went into side projects (only filmed during breaks of Teenwolf) and had to turn down numerous other projects and films, I dedicated 3 years to Teenwolf and made it my first priority. I have barely even posted on my YouTube channel (which I did before Teenwolf) because I’ve been so busy. Just know that i have no choice or power. The writers and producers make all the decisions. All I can do is show up and act. If I had a choice it might be different.”]

She was introduced in the show [just so the white sidekick could have a storyline where he was possessed by a Japanese demon] and, the moment Asian mythology became unnecessary, Arden began to be further and further pushed to the sidelines.

Even though it’s said that head writer Jeff Davis fought to keep her on the show, as soon as he stepped off of his position, MTV confirmed that Kira would not be in Season 6 because “her story was all wrapped up”, even though Jeff left her at he beginning of a very powerful arc about her powers and sense of self. Arden [loved this character], and the Yukimuras were the only regular Asian characters on the show.

Also, this week Kat Graham announced that [she’s leaving The Vampire Diaries], and though I’m not a TVD fan, I’ve seen talks that she was also mistreated. So that technically makes four.

@booasaur commented in another reblog: By the way, if people have twitter, THANK YOU ARDEN is trending worldwide right now 32.6K tweets. It’d be great to add to that support. She was always very outspoken about diversity and the difficulties of being a PoC actor. And remember, there’s a [trend for Abbie tomorrow] as well.

Cops Demolish Single Mom’s Home By Mistake, Destroy Children’s Christmas – Offer No Help

bogleech:

funkycodex:

On Tuesday, Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves and his
heroic team of militarized storm troopers descended on the home of a single mom
and her four kids. Upon removing the mother and her four children from the
house, police entered into a 20-hour-long standoff — with the empty house.

According to Sheriff Groves, police were looking for Doug
Alexius, a suspect wanted on a misdemeanor count of assaulting a law
enforcement officer and another drug-related charge. Upon entering the home,
the team used a ‘hi-tech’ and expensive infrared camera that showed them
Alexius was hiding in the attic. Incorrectly believing Alexius was in the
attic, they backed out and a 20-hour long standoff ensued.

“Time is on our side,” the sheriff said during their heated
standoff with an empty house. “We have the luxury of being able to rotate
officers out. At some point, he’s going to have to come out of there.”

After not breaking things or killing anyone for 19 hours,
the officers became restless, said to hell with the Sheriff’s strategy of
waiting for him to come out, and proceeded to storm the home.

A SWAT truck with a battering ram attached was used to poke
holes and tear apart the house in an attempt to drive the nonexistent suspect
out. As deputies became unable to find him, they began taking their frustration
out on couches, beds, lamps, clothing, toys, and even the family’s Christmas
tree was ripped through a window and smashed to bits.

The entire time, Nita Lane, the homeowner, was trying to
tell the cops that Alexius was not there and does not live there.

The sheriff, quite expectedly, remains unapologetic. Despite
being told by the victim that Alexius was not in her house, Groves maintains
that his officers acted in the best possible manner.

“Some may suggest you just rush in, and we could have
cleared that house in a matter of minutes. But if there was a suspect in there
and would have shot one of our officers or something else happened, and he was
able to breach the perimeter and jeopardize the safety of the residents nearby,
that’s not a risk I’m willing to take,” Groves continued entirely missing his
own point.

Groves did eventually “rush in and clear the house.” Just
because it took him 20-hours to decide to do it, doesn’t change that fact at
all.

Instead of apologizing or offering to help clean up the mess
he and his crony soldiers made, Groves refers the victim to some vague FBI
program that allegedly cleans up after cops wrongly destroy a family’s home.

The Free Thought Project spoke with the victim’s neighbor,
Vonda Macklin, who said the SWAT team, “left holes in ceiling, all the windows were
smashed out, holes in were left in the side of the house” and they literally
“ripped her Christmas tree apart,” using a set of claws on the front of a
vehicle.

full story

Cops don’t care about people. They should remember that they
deal with humans. Officers destroyed Christmas for this family, did nothing to
help them, made no apologies and then even said that they acted in the best
possible manner. It’s narcissism. Thank God they didn’t shot at Nita Lane and
her children. It’s a shame! But sadly this case is even not surprising. Too
many outrageous deeds was made by U.S. police lately.

You can donate to Lane’s family here.

What the fuck were their sensors picking up? If they can make a mistake that big they shouldn’t even be used at all.

Then again there’s literally no reason for mere police officers, who are legally civilians, to use any of this gear whatsoever.

Cop Handcuffed 7-Year-Old Boy for No Reason and then He Lost the Key

An angry mother recently posted cellphone video of her 7-year-old son in handcuffs at his elementary school. The officer who detained him was unable to release him because he lost his set of keys to the handcuffs….WTF??

7-years-old Cameron McCadden told his mother that he was handcuffed by police because he kicked a cart and refused to sit down when the officer asked him to, and the school has remained silent about the details of the incident.

In a statement, the Flint Police Department said that the student “appeared intent on injuring himself” and that “The officer used handcuffs to restrain the child to prevent injury to the child or others.” However, Cameron says that he never hit or threatened any of the other children, and no one at the school actually said that he did, the officer just said that he was afraid that the child might hurt someone.

Cameron’s mother, Chrystal McCadden, said that her son has ADHD and while he sometimes has difficulty focusing in class, he is not a violent person and has never exhibited any signs of violent behavior.

“He’s hyper. I’ve gotten these calls about (him) being hyper before. But he is not a violent kid. I’m still trying to get answers,” she said.

To make matters worse, when a distress McCadden got to school to pick up her handcuffed son, the officer cannot find the key.

“You put my son in handcuffs and you didn’t have the key. He wasn’t in here with a gun or knife. There was no other action you could do?” she added.

Flint Police Chief James Tolbert said Friday that he has apologized for the incident.

Now the young boy is likely traumatized, after a simple act of childhood disobedience was turned into a criminal act. smfh.

Letter to the RWA Board regarding For Such a Time by Kate Breslin

sarahwendell:

For Such a Time by Kate Breslin is an inspirational historical romance between a Nazi concentration camp commander and a Jewish prisoner. It was nominated by the Romance Writers of America for Best First Book and Best Inspirational Romance in 2014. It won neither category, but the book’s presence as a nominee has upset a growing number of people.

At Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, we undertake a community review project to try to give every RITA_nominated book a review before the awards are announced. The review for this book was written by a guest reviewer named Rachel, and it is extraordinarily good in my opinion.

Rose Lerner and her BFF have compiled a collection of the 5-star reviews for this book, as well.

After the RITA awards, which were held on July 25, 2014, I wrote a letter to the Board of Directors of Romance Writers of America to explain (or try to explain) why this book’s nominations were so offensive and upsetting. I sent this letter via email and received a response from the president of RWA. But in the conversations I’ve had online over the last few weeks, I’ve suggested people let the board know about their feelings as well.

So if it helps anyone who wants to clarify why this book’s nomination (and its publication at all) are so upsetting and offensive, here is the text of my letter:

July 27, 2015
Dear RWA Board of Directors:

This is one of the most difficult letters I’ve had to write, because each time I try to explain why I’m upset, and why I’m writing, I become more angry. But I’m deeply disturbed and distressed that For Such a Time by Kate Breslin was nominated for a RITA as Best First Book and Best Inspirational Romance.

If you’re not familiar with this book, the heroine, described by the publisher’s cover copy as a “blonde and blue-eyed Jewess,” is a prisoner in Theresienstadt, a Nazi concentration camp where over over 140,000 Jews were held. A quarter of the inmates there died of starvation and disease, and more than 90,000 were deported to Auschwitz and other extermination camps, where they were killed. By the end of World War II, a little over 17,000 people had survived Theresienstadt.

The hero of For Such a Time is an SS commandant who saves the heroine from being killed at Dachau, believing that she is not Jewish despite being raised in a Jewish family. He brings her to Theresienstadt to work as his personal secretary. So this is a romance between a Jewish prisoner and a Nazi officer who was in charge of a concentration camp.

To put it mildly, I don’t see this setup as an imbalance of power that could possibly be redeemed in a romance narrative, nor do I think the setting and characterization is remotely romantic. But I think this issue is much larger than my individual opinion.

The book is a retelling of the book of Esther set during the Holocaust, an ambitious undertaking to be sure. But in addition to the attempt at redeeming a hero who is a Nazi commander, at the end of the book, the heroine converts to Christianity, a narrative decision that also insensitive and offensive. Christianity is what redeems the heroine and the hero, and again, I’m at a loss for words to fully explain how and why this is so objectionable. But I will try.

In the Holocaust, over 6 million Jews, and more than 17 million people in total were killed by the Nazis. In For Such a Time, the hero is redeemed and forgiven for his role in a genocide. The stereotypes, the language, and the attempt at redeeming an SS officer as a hero belittle and demean the atrocities of the Holocaust. The heroine’s conversion at the end underscores the idea that the correct path is Christianity, erases her Jewish identity, and echoes the forced conversions of many Jews before, during, and after the Holocaust.

I am addressing each step in the process of this book by writing to the author, the editor, the head of the publishing house, and of course you, the board of the RWA. I know many of you personally and have a great deal of respect for the responsibilities you carry. I know that you don’t each personally oversee the RITA nominations, nor do you personally judge each book.

But the fact that this book was nominated in two categories is deeply hurtful, and I believe creates an environment where writers of faiths other than Christianity, not just Jewish writers, feel unwelcome. It certainly had that effect on me, because I don’t understand exactly how so many judges agreed that a book so offensive and insensitive was worthy of the RWA’s highest honor. But clearly enough did so, and the result for me as an RWA member is a feeling of distrust and pain, and concern that my reaction and feelings may not be heard.

I know that books like For Such a Time by Kate Breslin do not happen in a vacuum. More than one person had to agree that this story was worth writing, worth editing, worth publishing, and then worth nominating for the RITA as Best First Book and Best Inspirational Romance. I question the judgment of those who evaluated this book in the first round, and am, to be honest, very thankful that it did not win.

I have watched RWA enact some terrific programs and amend rules to reflect how the genre has changed for the better. I think this year’s conference was one of the best, especially given the difficult and complicated topics addressed in various sessions. I know each of you wants to advance the reputation and the professional community of romance and the women who write it. The nomination of this book does neither of those things.

I hope that in the future, there is a way to ensure that a book so deeply offensive and insensitive is not among those honored as the best in romance.

Sincerely,

Sarah Wendell
RWA Member

Remember that “HeadOn, apply directly to the forehead” shit? The story behind its marketing is one of my favorite advertising tales ever.

The original commercial for this product–which, if you don’t know what it is, it’s essentially a giant tube of Chapstick, or at least, that’s what it looks like–was just a looping video of a woman applying the product between her eyes and an announcer repeating the phrase “HeadOn, apply directly to the forehead” three times in succession. That’s the whole commercial: rubbing a stick on her head, and an announcer.

So this stuff was intended to be marketed as a product that relieves headaches by rubbing it on your forehead. But it wasn’t allowed to be marketed as such, because it’s just a homeopathic treatment–which means whatever compound was put into it was diluted to like one part per million, with the logic that “small amounts are strong” (yeah, okay)–and basically HeadOn was a tube of ordinary wax. Not any actual kind of medical treatment, and therefore it couldn’t be marketed as such.

Neighbors call police to a Suburb in McKinney,Texas when they learn that a family Invited “too many Black People” to their pool party . Cops Brutalize only black kids.

A McKinney police officer has been placed on administrative leave after a video that had surfaced online of an officer responding to a disturbance at a pool party in Craig Ranch with violence aimed only at the black teens.

The video shows the officer pulling a 14-year-old girl down and shoving her face first on the ground. When several other teenagers tried to help their friend, the video shows the officer pulling out his weapon and aiming it at them. The teenage girl could be heard screaming on the video, “I want to call my mom!!”

Witnesses stated they felt the officer acted inappropriately when dealing with the teenagers.

The neighbors however, said given the situation, they felt the officers “did what was necessary.”

Welcome to America. A country where pulling a gun on a group of kids and shoving them to the ground for “talkin shit” by a police officer is worth it.

CBS’ exploitative new reality show pits struggling families against each other for $101K

On Wednesday, CBS aired the first episode of their new series The Briefcase. The show follows struggling American families who are suddenly given $101,000 and a choice: They can either keep the money or give some or all of it to another needy family. But CBS’s decision to literally profit off impoverished Americans is worse than just simple corporate greed.
