Of course, that then shifts the conversation out of “it’s really not okay to kill the first black lesbian on your children’s show” territory and into “Is it really okay to leave fans of the first black lesbian on your children’s show hanging for a week about whether she lives or dies” territory. (And I’d say ‘no’ to that last questions, honestly.)

There are a couple of folks on Gallifrey Base who have seen the episode already, and although they’re obviously sworn to secrecy about what exactly happens, they’re pretty adamant that Bill’s apparent cyber-conversion doesn’t stick.
And even more promisingly, someone’s gotten a picture of Pearl Mackie on the set for the Christmas Special! (I will not link to it as I don’t want to be sued into oblivion by the BBC.) Which admittedly means very little on its own, as it could be a flashback or a dream or who knows what, but considering that a few days ago we didn’t even know if she was in it…
A production source on the show assured RadioTimes.com that Mackie’s answer to the question was not a confirmation that her character would die.
“Pearl was answering about the scene where Bill appeared to die before being taken away for ‘treatment’ at the hospital, where viewers later discovered that she was eventually converted into a Mondasian Cyberman. This is not confirmation either way.”
In an interview with Graham Norton yesterday Mackie did her best not to give any clues, but she hinted that she would be keen to continue playing the character under new showrunner Chris Chibnall.
I mean, I’m instinctively distrustful of unnamed ‘sources’, but on the other hand the BBC and the Radio Times have a pretty close relationship, so who knows
i completely adore how when bill’s with the roman soldiers and she tells them that she only likes girls, the soldier in charge just shrugs and says “you’re like my friend, he only likes boys” and then goes on to say he himself likes girls and boys like it’s the most normal thing in the world, it was so sweet i’m glad bill made a bunch of queer roman friends bless her heart.
