remember when actual sunflower harry james potter, who had never had pocket money before, excitedly bought out the candy trolley so he could split the goods with ron weasley, a boy he had just met? i think about that a lot because wow, the first time harry was ever allowed to have something that was just his, his first instinct was to share it.
Today on ‘kids are way more chill than adults and we should learn from them’:
I was waiting in line at a cinema when I heard a little boy and girl (who couldn’t have been more than ten) start talking about Ghostbusters as they stood in front of a massive poster. The convo went like this:
Girl: Ghostbusters? What the heck is that?
Boy: Oh! They have guns and they fight ghosts –
Girl: You’ve seen it? Is it scary?
Boy: No, I’ve seen the other ones. One was all boys, two was all boys, and now three is all girls. I haven’t seen the third one.
Girl: But was it scary? I don’t like scary movies.
Boy: Nah, it’s not scary. But if you want to, I can watch it with you.
Adults are out there all hysterical that the new Ghostbusters is going to ‘ruin their childhood’. Actual children are either concerned if it’s scary, and ready to sit with their friend if it is.
There’s a very old graveyard next to my uncle’s house that happens to have (apparently rare?) Pokémon. As caretaker of the lot, which has a LOT of cool texas history associated with it, he doesn’t see a ton of people come visit because it’s out in the middle of nowhere.
But recently, there’s been truckloads of college kids, teens, families, and grandparents all coming by to catch Pokémon. Some just pass through, but many accept his offer of a Coke and a lawn chair to sit and talk for a while. Once pokémon have been successfully acquired, he starts to tell them the cool history of the area, and the visitors are fascinated.
People have sent him emails and called him later, asking for more details and doing their own research on the battles fought there and the people who died. There’s now a Facebook page about it? It’s a thing-catch pokémon but more importantly ask the caretaker about Texas blood feuds.
And like, you see so much negativity about how games distract and people are mindless drones because of them. But a video game brought dozens and dozens of people to my uncle’s plot and gave him an audience of interested listeners who are taking that knowledge back to their own communities and spreading the word to come visit.
7-year-old Matilda decided to dress up as the characters from “Ghostbusters” when she went to see the movie. Her favourite characters from the film are Holtzman and Patty, but she “likes them all”, said her dad. “It’s awesome to have movies with strong female characters.”
