Because sometimes what you need most are teeny tiny baby turtle friends. These are brand new, freshly hatched Bellinger River Snapping Turtles at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia. Just look at them. They’re so cute!
These adorable hatchlings are a vital part of an ongoing conservation effort by the Taronga Zoo to save this critically endangered species, which is endemic to Australia. Nearly 90% of their local population was wiped out by a newly discovered disease. But now the zoo has 21 tiny turtle hatchlings to help boost their numbers.
“There could be as few as 200 Bellinger River Snapping Turtles remaining in the wild, so these hatchlings have a vital role to play in rebuilding this population,” Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said.
