Star Wars for the fandom thing? (it was the only thing I recognized I don’t think has been asked)
Aw NICE I have so many for Star Wars
….wait, d’ya mean the movies themselves or the fandom? NEVER MIND I WILL DO BOTH
1) More LBGT characters in the movies. Or…any. It’s long overdue. Chirrut and Baze could’ve been husbands with one throwaway line of dialogue! I would change that immediately
2) I would change the fandom constantly using the prequels as a punchline/an exercise in gatekeeping etc, I love them and a lot of folks do
3) I would also change…pretty much the whole fandom, present company excepted, because it is terrible and bigoted and cruel in pretty much every way
4) I would change Watto because he is very much an antisemitic stereotype, and a very obvious one that I can’t believe no-one looked at and went “wait a minute…” >:(
5) More ladies
Here’s a rebuttal on Watto. I remember from around the time of release there was a NY1 segment on various communities in NY who thought Watto was offensive to their ethnic group. The Jewish community was something like… third or fourth on the list. Ahead of them were Turkish, Greek and Italians. Maybe Russians too? I don’t think they even had a Jewish commentator on, but just mentioned it tangientally.
So, obviously there’s a fair amount of broad, commonly widespread catch-as-catch-can ethnic stereotype elements in Watto, mostly surrounding Mediterranean types. But it’s a bit of a mistake I think to simply sum him up as anti-semitic, just like Jar Jar is more a wholesale miscalculation of character, writing and performance than the simplistic minstrel accusations that usually get thrown around. Let’s not label these movies as racist where they don’t deserve it.
The Trade Federation accents, however. Hoo boy.
I don’t know…. I don’t think any of the racial stereotypes in Star Wars were done maliciously, but it takes so many people to design, animate and voice a Star Wars character and you’d just think at one point someone would have…. noticed. Like, in AOTC (which I feel is the main offender) Watto’s even wearing a hat not dissimilar to the black hats Orthodox Jews wear.
(As much as I like him as a person, I do think the blame rather lies at Lucas’s door. I mean, it’s his job to ultimately greenlight the designs.)
I once heard the Neimoidian accents were meant to be Transylvanian, to make them sound like vampires, but I’m guessing something went horribly wrong there….
