uk christmas ads of 2016, ranked

the good:

amazon: actually an excellent and important ad! watch it here. also, prob not a uk-specific ad (good) but the Iman featured in it runs a school 20 minutes down the road from me so that’s damn cool 100/10

waitrose ad 1: adorable little robin is saved from drowning by sailors, eats a mine pie, a good time is had by all. ornithologically inaccurate af, apparently, but I don’t care 10/10

very: cute little pixar/dreamworks animated ad, so sweet it will make your teeth fall out, I like it 9/10

the average:

john lewis: heartless animals ruin a little girl’s christmas by stealing her trampoline. this ad made racists angry for no other reason than it featured a black family, so it gets several more points for that 8/10

marks and spencer: thanks tom hooper, that was very moving. now release the les miserables 2012 deleted scenes already 7/10

aldi ad 1: an anthropomorphic carrot called kevin aims for something higher, gets grated, ends up dangled on a stick in front of ruldolph. a perfect metaphor for 2016 6/10

the bad:

aldi ad 2: kevin the carrot falls down the chimney on christmas day to see his fellow carrots being eaten. a even better metaphor for 2016 5/10

argos: neon coloured yetis ice-skate to the nightmare before christmas soundtrack, fail to change the awful quality of argos furniture 4/10

tescos ad 1: you’re so much better than this, ruth jones and ben miller 3/10

tescos ad 3: you’re still probably better than this, ruth jones and ben miller 2/10

tescos ad 5+: you two are dead to me 1/10

the ugly:

waitrose ad 2: features a “banana and bacon cake”. 0/10
