been watching The Crown
The acting and costuming and directing are all incredible, but there’s a little bit too much exposition in the dialogue, too many times when a character has something explained for them that they should already know just for the benefit of the audience. (You’d think the Queen would have known from childhood what a regnal name is.)
Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson are somewhat whitewashed, no mention is made at all about the pair of them probably being Nazi sympathizers. Prince Phillip is actually not whitewashed, the show makes it pretty clear that he was an obnoxious racist and total dick most of the time, which I believe he still is in fact…
I love how people keep referring to Elizabeth in-show as “a child” even though before she even became Queen she was a fully grown woman with two children. It doesn’t skimp on showing just how much sexism she faced even when she had a crown on her head.
One thing this show makes abundantly clear is that it sucks being a royal, and I agree to be honest. Sure, you have privilege and wealth and power (though really, not that much power) but in return you basically have no freedom whatsoever. You can’t marry who you want, you can’t dress how you want, you can’t say what you want if anyone is listening, you can barely do anything really. And you have to be smiling so frequently you need Botox injections just so you can keep doing it. (That was a particularly memorable scene. Wonder if it really happened.) I tell you, I don’t envy Kate Middleton and her kids, not one bit.
