So, thanks to @lacefedora and her lovely Redamancy shorts, I’m firmly convinced that Shmi Skywalker was Force Sensitive, but that her inherent skills were overshadowed by the bright light that was her son. I bet she would have made a very powerful Force User if anyone had ever bothered to train her.
And that just got me thinking.
I bet she felt Qui-Gon die. I bet she was just sitting in her home, alone, and felt that thread break. Death leaves a stronger mark than life in the Force, especially a cruel death. It echoes far and long, and the Force, like waves in the sea, never stills or settles. Every life extinguished is just one more crest.
I bet Shmi knew immediately that that kind man who had rescued her boy from the fate of a slave had died.
I bet she didn’t know for weeks if Anakin was even alive or not, until a random broadcast in a random cantina she happened to pass by showed him standing in Naboo, hardly recognizable with his hair cut shut and his little 10 year old body in the clothing of a Jedi Padawan.
I bet Shmi kept up with every bit of Jedi news she could find, in the small hope of seeing her son as he grew.
I bet on nights when the loneliness and the worry that she had made a grave mistake took over, and not even Cliegg’s soft assurances could calm her, she would go out and stand on the Skywalker Angst Hill next to the Lars Moisture Farm, and search through the Force without even realizing she was.
I bet on nights like that, light years away, Anakin would wake up with a smile on his face and not know why.
I mean, I wasn’t planning to cry over Skywalkers tonight but here we are.

I’ve always wanted to write a story where Shmi and Qui-gon immediately have a training bond. Because she’s DEFINITELY too old to be a Jedi…but then, not all Force users are Jedi.
