PS okay here is everything I know about the Stranger Things characters having never seen an episode but following 100s of people who love it:

Eleven: Small girl who was experimented on by evil scientists and now has superpowers. Adopted by gruff but loving sheriff dude. Real name: Jane. ICONIC

Will: Cute. Bad hair. Possibly gay? Adorable

Dustin, Lucas and Mike: Wholesome bunch of friends who ride around on bikes. Have great mothers who support them. Also Dustin is played by a wee kid who was a Gavroche in Les Mis

Steve: Jerk turned accidental mother to the aforementioned kids. Has baseball bat for smashing gender roles

Billy: (was it Billy?) Abusive asshole who terrorises his stepsister, Lucas, and prob many more. I’ve seen articles talking about how everyone loves him and??? he’s a monster

Max: Sweet red-headed girl, the stepsister in question. Goes out with Lucas and (to my delight) gets revenge on her abuser at some point

Nancy: Teenage girl, gets about as much respect from the male-dominated side of ST fandom as teenage girl characters do from anywhere

Jonathan: I can’t tell Jonathan and Steve apart I’m sorry

Joyce: Mother to Will and to… Jonathan? Played by Winona Ryder. Queen. Deserves so much better than what she had to go through. Rightly loved

Hopper: Aforementioned gruff sheriff dude. Lost a daughter to cancer or some other illness? A Good Dad

Kali: Another girl who was experimented on. Rightly wants revenge I think

Bob: Nice and dead

Barb: Also nice and dead

The Demogorgon: A monster, possibly still around, has dogs??? Scary

There’s this Mary Sue article about how Barb is a shitty slut-shaming friend and it’s one of the biggest reaches possible.  Barb was in, what, one or two episodes?  And literally all she did was not want to go to a party with jerks.  And for that the writer is glad she’s dead?

I still don’t watch Stranger Things, but I’ve learned so much about it from my dash that I might as well – when this article/the general Barb Discourse was going around, I remember thinking “y’know, ‘if you have sex YOU won’t die but your innocent best female friend might’ isn’t really that much of an improvement.”
