I loved Big Bang Beryl. :-D

I like that out of two episodes so far, we have two women who are bigger than a size 10.

YES THIS. Isn’t it nice to have women appear in the show who over a size 10…and it’s not commented on, mocked or drawn attention to in the plot line?

Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! All of this! And Big Bang Beryl was clearly meant to specifically be a “sexy” character. In a world where the sexual ideal for womanhood is often portrayed as being both thin and very young, (not that young thin people aren’t sexy, it just shouldn’t be lauded as the ONLY option for sexy, for any gender) this was lovely to see. It’s wonderful!

Who would allow this man, this joke of a man, this man who could not outwit a used teabag, to be in a position where he might endanger the entire crew? Who? Only a yoghurt. This man is not guilty of manslaughter, he is only guilty of being Arnold J. Rimmer. That is his crime. It is also his punishment.

One of my favourite Lister moments is in “Entangled” where Rimmer is doing everything in his power to keep the naked woman in front of them naked for as long as possible and Lister just takes off his coat and hands it to her.

(It’s still a bizarrely sexist episode, really, but I like that bit.)

I haven’t seen the episode in question (I haven’t watched any of the recent serieses) but this rings true to both their characterisation as I remember it. For all his failings and his sex-obsessed nature, he really likes women. Once you get past his defences he’s actually a bit of a hopeless romantic.

The thing is Lister would absolutely love to see that woman naked – and won’t hesitate to tell her so – but it’s only fun if she’s naked because she wants to be, not cause she has to be.
