Naboo Headcanons: The Monarch of Naboo
Even when their government changed from hereditary monarchy to elective monarchy, the planet of Naboo has always been ruled by a Queen and never a King. While there is no law that forbids men to run for the position, the Naboo society frowns upon those that do so since they defy the tradition born from the history of their planet.
The law is also not forbidding Gungans to run as Monarch of Naboo. However, no Gungans has yet to participate. The continuing mutual hatred between the Humans and Gungans in Naboo is still an issue yet to be completely resolved.
The Monarch of Naboo is instated by a planet-wide election after a rigorous campaign by candidates. The Coronation Ceremony is always done the morning after the winner of the election is proclaimed.
– There are four (4) years in one (1) term of a Monarch.
– A Monarch can run and be re-elected into the position twice but never more. They can rule for eight (8) years if they are immediately re-elected after the first term.
– A Monarch can only be removed from their position by the unanimous vote of the Royal Court and the Royal Advisory Council after a public trial.
– A Monarch may resign from the position.
– If a ruling Monarch 1.) resigned, 2.) died, or 3.) deposed during the middle of their term, the candidate with the next largest accumulated votes during the election would replace them as Interim Monarch. The Coronation Ceremony would be done the morning after: 1.) the resigned Monarch leaves the Palace, 2.) the funeral of the deceased Monarch is done, or 3.) the deposed Monarch is removed from the Palace.
*The Interim Monarch can rule the planet for only the amount of time the previous Monarch had left in their unfinished term.
*The Interim Monarch would have their own Circle of Handmaidens and wardrobe.
*The Interim Monarch can be re-elected once but never more.
– When a Monarch finishes their term, they can forgo the application process to become a member of the Royal Advisory Council or to become the Naboo Representative in the Senatorial Entourage of Chommel Sector. They would only need the approval of the current ruling Monarch.
– When a Monarch leaves the Palace, they would take with them their whole wardrobe sans the Regal Gown. Their Circle of Handmaidens would also come along with them. The Royal Court has a choice of following them or not.
– The trend of electing very young rulers started during the very first Monarch election in Naboo. The last hereditary Monarch was elected as Queen – she was fourteen (14) years of age. She ruled wisely and well. Her term brought a good connotation for young rulers since then. The oldest Monarch to rule after her was nineteen (19).
– Notable Monarchs of Naboo are given titles and are remembered as such in their history. Example is the last hereditary monarch who was remembered by history as “Queen The Wise”
At Work In Canon:
– Queen Amidala ruled for eight (8) years. She had two (2) simultaneous terms. The people of Naboo and the Royal Advisory Council petitioned to amend the law to extend her term. The Royal Court declined and she was able to leave the Palace after Queen Jamillia was instated.
– Queen Amidala was given the title “Queen The Great”
– Queen Jamillia asked Amidala to become the Naboo Representative for the Chommel Senatorial Entourage. Amidala took the offer and was later elected to become the Senator of the Chommel Sector.
– Queen Jamillia never finished her term. She resigned from her position after the Clone Wars broke out. She only ruled for two (2) years.
– Queen Neeyutnee was an Interim Queen. She replaced Jamillia after she resigned. She ruled for two (1) years.
– Queen Apailana was the youngest Monarch elected in Naboo. She had already ruled the planet for one (1) year when the Clone wars ended, the Galactic Empire was founded, and Senator Amidala was killed. She only ruled for two (2) more years before she was executed for treason.
– Queen Apailana was given the title “Queen The Fallen”
– After Queen Apailana, no Interim Queen ruled. A Queen of the Emperor’s choosing was put into the position as Monarch immediately – she was called the “Imperial Queen”. Her term would not end until the Emperor says so. She would also be never removed as a Monarch by the Royal Court and the Royal Advisory Council. Only the Emperor can do so.
