An old, rather telling Kevin Spacey interview snippet
Anthony Rapp said on the witness stand today that he found Kevin Spacey’s performance in American Beauty “unpleasantly familiar” and it made me think of this moment in a 2004 Total Film interview where Spacey gets very, very uncomfortable on being compared to his American Beauty character.
![Total Film: You've said that American Beauty's Lester Burnham is the role you've most connected to...
Kevin Spacey: It seems highly unlikely that I would have said that. I've connected on some level to most of the roles that I've played. I'm trying to think why I would have said that...
Total Film: Perhaps because you were rallying against being typecast, just as Lester rallies against the tedium
of his middle-aged life?
Kevin Spacey: [Delivered with the famous Spacey sneer] I think
you're looking for a through-line that just doesn't work.](https://overlydevotedarchivist.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/spacey-interview-1024x923.jpg)
From Total Film issue 96, December 2004. Guess now we know why he would have said that.
