Stop Blaming John Green for Stuff He’s Not Guilty Of 2kForever
John Green is the biggest example of “tumblr turning on people it used to love to reach for and literally invent call outs for no reason other than its apparently cool to shit on things that are popular.”
I’ll forever be bitter about what this ignorant ass site did to him after his books had so much fucking impact on my life.
The homophobic sexual harassment of him was a ~highlight~, too.
Can we go back to romanticizing john green books? Like he is actually the chillest dude and other than being pretentious he hasnt done any bad shit.
Like him and his brother spend so much of their time actively trying to make the world a better place and we take this dude and make him the worst person online like seriously wtf?
He has spoken up about dozens of issues including environmental issues, world health, the treatment of women and he and his brother have a charity that many times a year they actively spend time and effort to raise awareness to our hundreds of issues as a planet.
Like fuck man he is a real good dude and all you need to do to see that is google his name and watch a few videos but u judge people off memes you read on the internet instead of making your own opinion
Not sexually harassing him with homophobic memes or signing him up to fascist mailing lists would be good too.
Sometimes I think about that John Green thing that happened…was it last year? The thing with the post editing that co-incided with Tumblr turning off the edit original post option, or possibly was a direct result of it?
It just. It ended in so many people, devoted crusaders for justice in their bios like everyone here says they are, going “eh, you know what, sexual harassment is totally okay if it’s against someone we don’t like” and starting that bizarre homophobic “John Green likes cocks” meme and doing loads of weird shit to him, and sure he’s an arrogant twat most likely but we’re all arrogant twats, and…that wasn’t okay, and it just sort of freaks me out that everyone thinks it is. Still thinks it is? It lowkey scares me a ridiculous amount.
John Green is wrong about a lot of things and the way he interacts with his fanbase sometimes bothers me (as well as a lot of other people), and these are legitimate things that he deserves criticism for
defacing a post he made to make it look like he admitted to liking dick, laughing about this as though it’s not homophobic as fuck, and responding to his displeasure with “fuck off and go cry into your big piles of money” is not a valid method of criticism, it just makes you look like a jealous callous asshole
A thing to understand about the Green Bros’ fanbase is that it’s massive. Overwhelmingly huge. Tons of them haven’t even read any of John’s books, but know them from their early (and continuing, and very genuinely valuable) YouTube work. Educational stuff like Crash Course and SciShow.
And… like, I don’t think John Green fully grasps how YOUNG that fanbase is. He’s been doing Internet stuff since at least 2007. Nearly nine years. Kids who were 12 when he started are old enough to drink now. So I think he didn’t realize that newer fans were so much younger.
And above all else, he didn’t think of himself as a threatening presence, because he never threatened anyone. People felt threatened by him. I only half-understand why.
And now he’s left social media (other than the Vlogbrothers channel) and people are still pulling this shit and being incredibly gross while doing it and it’s just
they’ve found a punching bag that won’t ever punch back.
John Green has said some stuff I find really dubious (the Anne Frank thing for example) but someone’s still gonna have to explain to me how the post-editing thing wasn’t sexual harassment
