There is an explanation, yes! (though it’s given rather less prominence than I’d like) And as for your other question-

only Logan and Charles alas. I was convinced Magento would have to show up at some point but he didn’t…

YEEEES. I’ve been arguing with this person all afternoon about Mary Jane and your post was amazing, and beautiful, and everything I tried to put into words and failed to put into words. They fail to understand that nobody is disagreeing that MJ is frequently a damsel in distress; the problem is that they’re acting as if that means her character has no purpose or meaning, and that’s absolutely wrong. -iputabirdonmyhead

Yes! That’s exactly it! I could have done without her character being put in danger quite as much, but that doesn’t mean her character in general isn’t absolutely amazing.
