you can actually demonstrate the principles of physics behind this in your bathtub! take a small glass in the tub with you and submerge it so that it fills up with water. then pull it up base-first, leaving the rim submerged. the water in the cup will rise above the surface of the water in the tub. this is because the only way for the water to leave would be by creating a vacuum, so atmospheric pressure holds it in place.
