AU: Amy/Rory: The soldier and the queen

Amy is a warrior queen on a distant planet- there’s no technology, only grand castles and noble deeds. Rory is the Doctor’s companion, keen to see more of the universe and help out wherever he is needed.

Amy’s planet is at war. The Doctor wants to help, but the situation to him seems to delicate and too full of fixed points to meddle in. Rory, though…

Rory falls in love with the Queen, at almost first sight. Amy has feelings for him too, but she has no time for love, as she is due to lead her warriors into one final, near-suicidal battle.

On the eve of the battle, Rory puts on the costume of a warrior and goes to fight with her, despite her insistance that he should stay away. He fights bravely, but Amy is the warrior, and she doesn’t want nor need him to die for her-

-but he does. He takes a shot she could have easily deflected, and dies in her arms. The Doctor leaves the planet, never to return, The Queen and her armies defeat their enemy, and order and justice are restored- but Amy mourns terribly for her Rory, a boy who threw his life away for love.

SFX magazine names Amy/Rory their second-greatest sci-fi romance Of All Time. (Jack/Ianto and John Smith/Joan also made the list.) What makes Amy and Rory work is the undeniable chemistry between Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, who seem perfectly at ease with each other in every scene. While you believe Amy is fond of the Doctor, her body language is all about Rory, just as his is all about her. They’re not just husband and wife, they’re best mates. And isn’t that what all relationships should be? Yay!
