How ‘Revenge of the Sith’ Almost Broke ‘Star Wars’
There’s a lot of things which bug me about this article, but –
Everyone wanted to be Han Solo. Or Leia. Or Luke. Or Chewie. They would
role-play the parts or get crazy immersed in the action figures. Sith and
the rest of the prequels sorely lack the dynamic characters that
inspire such enthusiastic hero worship, in ways that leave us cold or
worse, wishing we never got to see the movie in George Lucas’ head and
just kept replaying the one in ours.
Ours? My god, who’s this ours? This us? There’s a MASSIVE prequels fandom! It’s on tumblr, reddit, twitter, it’s impossible to avoid! There are teenage girls on every social media site who grasp the themes and messages of Star Wars better than some of the people peripherally involved in it do. There are whole essays written about Anakin, about Ewan McGregor’s performance as Obi-Wan, about the portrayal of women in the prequels, endless posts about how they relate to real-life issues, politics, propaganda… and none of that ever gets any attention, while an article talking about how a movie that didn’t remotely break Star Wars broke Star Wars… does?
I know it’s a stupid thing to be annoyed about but one of the reasons I don’t really count myself as being in Star Wars fandom is because still no-one lets me in! Gah.
