Two celebrity coming-outs
I try not to keep too much of an eye on things that happen on Twitter, I really try. It’s toxic in a way I don’t think we even have a word for yet. But I remember the other day, British celeb (and The Good Place star) Jameela Jamil came out as “queer” after she was asked to judge a voguing show. I’ll be honest, I had never heard of voguing before. But here’s her statement:
And I read through the backlash on Twitter, the exact same thing she was talking about. I saw lots of people basically saying “How convenient.” Then I read more than one tweet comparing her to Kevin Spacey, and that’s when I got furious. Kevin Spacey came out as gay after being accused OF RAPE, not after being asked to judge a dance competition. How in the world are those two things comparable?! What happened?!?
Anyway earlier today news hit that Philip Schofield, another British celeb, came out as gay. Here’s his statement:
There were plenty of mean comments in the replies to that tweet, don’t get me wrong, mostly ones about him marrying a woman and a bunch of complete shit about “virtue signalling.” (Sigh) But. But…..
…Phil has also come out at a “convenient time,” right? He was getting backlash over his politics just a few weeks ago. So where are the people comparing him to, I cannot overstate this, A RAPIST? Why did that happen to Jameela and not her white male counterpart? I’m in total and utter despair.
