full offense but the last man on earth is peak comedy and deserves as much love and attention as shows like brooklyn nine nine or parks and rec and y’all are sleeping on it

Like, I do get that its particular brand of silly humor (fart jokes, poop jokes, characters annoying each other…) is not for everyone, and season one isn’t really all that great, especially regarding the female characters. But right on from season two it’s amazing. And you get so much goodness representation-wise, especially from the women:

  • Melissa, a white woman who struggles with mental illness and also doesn’t want to get pregnant, even though the central group of characters are attempting to repopulate the earth by having as many kids as possible. She’s good with children but she doesn’t want any of her own, and she sticks to her guns and the narrative respects that. (As someone in a similar situation, I love her.)
  • Erica, a black queer woman who is the youngest and most innocent of the core group
  • Gail, a white queer woman over 50 with a good few questions in her past, none of which we will find out the answers to if the show gets canceled
  • Carol, another white woman who (although the show has never said it outright…) definitely comes off as an autistic person. She’s the female lead and (post season 2) her husband adores her and would sacrifice anything for her. Also her outfits are amazing
  • Jasper, a very young black kid who’s mostly mute owing to the trauma he’s suffered, although the adults help him out he prefers to be alone most of the time
  • Todd, a Latino man who starts off overweight and doesn’t get thin. (Post season two, I think the show stopped making jokes about his weight entirely.)
  • Mike, a white male scientist and astronaut who I’m pretty sure has PTSD. He definitely would’ve been the hero if this show was a drama, but here he’s… he’s a woobie, as the kids say. Constantly suffering, damn.
  • Tandy, the white possibly-not-straight man who’s the main/title character, although these days you can get through whole episodes and never realise he’s meant to be the main character, because the show’s so much an ensemble piece now. (Also the title means absolutely nothing anymore, obviously.)

….this is all to say it’s a really good show, and I feel like so many more people would love it if they just knew it existed. But as it stands it might end up being cancelled and… sigh… replaced with a show about a Trump supporter. C’mon guys! Apparently a vocal fanbase managed to save Brooklyn 99 so if there’s anything you can do for this one, even just watching the season finale 9:30/8:30c on Fox

tomorrow, please help us do it!
