Still a better redemption arc than Severus Snape

Oskar Groning oversaw the murders of thousands of innocent people. He was known as “the accountant of Auschwitz” and justified the killing of children by telling himself they would “grow up to become dangerous Jews.” At one point, he witnessed an officer smash a baby’s head against the side of a truck until it died, and did nothing. Most of his life post-Auschwitz he spent in comfort, denying that he’d ever done anything legally wrong. When he was finally put on trial he asked for forgiveness, and a few of his victims forgave him but plenty did not.

Severus Snape is a fictional character.
