I figured out what has been borking quote marks in Tumblr posts, and it is HILARIOUS. And sad.
I don’t know if anyone else has noticed that sometimes you get posts on your dash, even older posts, where all the quote marks look like this:
I figured it was probably something like smart quotes or some weird formatting thing MS Word was doing that didn’t get lost when text was c&p’d. But no. It is far, far stupider than that.
It’s readmores. This is what Tumblr has suddenly started doing to posts that contain quote marks and/or apostrophes along with a readmore. That’s why it happens to older posts too; it doesn’t seem to matter if they’re new or old, just whether they’re being viewed in the dash (or the sidebar dash emulator that uses the same style). And it doesn’t matter if it’s curly quotes or straight quotes or quotes typed in Tumblr’s own damn posting window. It’s the quote + readmore combo that seems to do it.
I’m also not sure if there is some OTHER factor that causes it to happen sometimes but not others, because surely it can’t happen EVERY TIME or the readmore would be literally unusable, because no one is going to be able to type a long enough post to require a readmore without a single apostrophe in it. It might only be happening in certain browsers or certain OS’s. However, it happened in all of my test posts even if they literally contain the text “text” typed over and over (with an occasional quote mark). So in case you were wondering why that entire long SSR Confidential post I just posted isn’t cut … this is why. I can’t without borking the quotes. However, just deleting the readmore fixed it, so … ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Edit: And then I realized that I posted a fairly long post with a readmore like 2 days ago?? So apparently sometimes it works fine??? Anyway, if you have a post that is inexplicably screwing up its quotes and it has a readmore in it, try deleting it and see if it helps, because it might.
