“Javert can’t be black because black people didn’t exist in 19th century France”

Alexandre Dumas would have something to say about that.

This seems as good a time as any to remind people that Dumas’ father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, was the first person of colour in the French military to become a brigadier general, a divisional general, and general-in-chief of a French army.

So please do tell us how unrealistic it is for a person of colour to serve as a policeman in 19th century France?
