I understand that it’s important for people to realise they can like things that are bad. There’s an important corollary, though: it’s okay to think that the things you like are good. You don’t have to trot out a list of flaws or say ‘oh, I know it’s bad, but I still like it’ every time you talk about that movie that got panned by critics, or that book that everyone and their cat gave a bad review on Goodreads, or Nickelback. You can just like them for what they are and appreciate the things that you like about them.
Like, it’s good to be able to think critically about things you like, but there comes a point sometimes where you have to look at what Rotten Tomatoes or the New York Times or Pitchfork or whoever is saying and respectfully disagree. It doesn’t pay to pick everything you love apart looking for flaws so you can appear to have good taste to people whose taste you don’t appreciate or agree with. Enjoy your thing! Don’t feel bad for not liking it despite or because it’s ‘bad’! Taste is subjective!
