exactly. there’s nothing there. not a statue. not a plaque. nothing.
Just got back from Berlin – the city has now begrudgingly erected one small information board nearby that explains in vague terms about the bunker and its chronology, but they make it explicit that the existence of the board is only to satiate tourists who became curious about its location after watching Der Untergang (Downfall), the German-produced, -written, -acted film about Hitler’s final days.
There is no image of Hitler, Goebbels, or any SS officer anywhere in sight. It’s a car park, and that’s all it must ever be, because we will continue to make the collective choice that those who commit genocide do not deserve our commemoration.
