So the official dw youtube channel made a video about the history of lgbt people working on the show, the affects the show has on the community, lgbt characters and storylines, etc. I really liked the video and it helped me a lot, but the comment section is a fucking mess bc people are mad about “forced diversity”. Do these people know that the doctor is a pansexual genderfluid alien? do they know that the first director who worked on the show is a gay Indian man? Like what were they expecting

pt 2, and the show has always had political undertones ( the show’s main
villains are based off the nazis ), and sci-fi in general is a very
diverse and very political genre so I don’t get these white cishet man
babies crying about “forced diversity”

I have to admit that I don’t find “man babies” to be a particularly useful insult and the sad fact is that, no, not all of these people are going to be white, cis, straight men. But yeah, dammit, this stuff is so frustrating. And there’s just so much irony, it’s very difficult to take. I feel lucky that Doctor Who has increasingly pissed off these people. (The pinnacle of which probably remains the existence of a youtube video called “Radical Feminism: Doctor Who Hates Men”. And that was before Jodie Whittaker was cast…)

I’ve only watched a couple of minutes here and there of that youtube video (thank you for the recommendation!), but it seems amazing. The fandom here is full of LGBTQ+ people and it’s wonderful to see that acknowledged this way. You have to wonder if most of the people commenting even watched it, because it seems like a very personal, down-to-earth journey through the world of Doctor Who, as they address diversity and representation as something which isn’t just an online talking point for them. The contrast is stark, between the eloquence of that and… whatever the hell youtube comment section qualify as.
