I’ve now seen multiple posts claiming that Bill’s sexuality is her only character trait, and honestly, that is complete nonsense.
We know that Bill is inquisitive and quick on the uptake, that she enjoys learning and is a nerd who loves movies (especially sci-fi) and got an A* on a test where she wrote about Roman Britain and the 9th Legion. She has a rocky relationship with her foster mum and a good friendship with Shireen. Bill is open about her emotions and doesn’t try to hide when she’s angry or sad or upset. Similarly, she doesn’t try to hide when she’s delighted, and practically glows with her happiness. Insults don’t tend to faze her, and she’s resilient and bounces back quickly from setbacks. Her instinct is to be kind, and she’s good at making friends.
Given that we know all this, that’s it all clearly shown onscreen, and that, while the writing may sometimes be inconsistent, these traits are pretty constant over the course of the season, why do people claim that her sexuality is her only trait? Is it because they find her mentioning more than once that she’s not into guys to be overkill? To me, that’s a refreshing change of pace, to have a character who is open about her sexuality and preference for girls. If some people think that it’s unrealistic or offensive to have a lesbian speak frankly about her attraction, maybe they should consider confronting their own prejudices instead of attacking Bill as a character.
