I’m 21 years old and severely disabled from a fall down a faulty staircase when I was 17. The last 4 years have been spent living in extreme poverty, because I’m both completely bedridden and estranged from abusive family. Accident compensation is now the ONLY reliable means of paying for astronomical disability costs on which my life itself is now dependent. My case is set for a hearing on Feb 2 EST, for which I risk having no legal representation unless payment for costs is made on time.

Because the accident, I will be completely bedbound for the rest of my life and I can’t afford healthcare costs without compensation. For instance, my social worker feared I could be placed in a nursing home if we had requested government services to fund the full 24 hrs care I need. I might also be left to fundraise for much of the $15,000/year in private paramedic transport costs for monthly medical appointments as the  government’s standard transport scheme only covers $1,606/year.

As a result of being physically vulnerable I have also been frequently targeted for psychiatric confinement, which was a factor in hastening my physical decline to becoming completely bedbound within 1 year of my accident. The most effective method to prevent psychiatric abuse is to attend regular private psychology consultations, for which I could be expected to pay upwards of $4,800/year due to Australian Medicare coverage limited to only 10 sessions/ year.

The deprivation and abuse I have already suffered has placed me in serious harm. I now experience agonising spinal pain whenever I use my hands, and I suffer nerve tearing throughout my body whenever I so much as open my eyes. I have limited lung capacity and can only expand my chest partially because of the extent of nerve tearing which has occurred, and at times of stress or physical aggravation I struggle with breathing. I simply cannot risk my condition getting worse and I NEED guaranteed funding for healthcare over a lifetime.
