Comedy’s One Rule

fixyourwritinghabits:

There’s one rule and one rule alone, for comedy. You want to know what it is? Lean in close.

You punch up. Always.

You throw the whipped cream in the face of a racist. You tell the homophobe to pull your finger. You put the whoopee cushion under the rear of a sexist. You thumb your nose at government and the gridlock it spawns. You mock systems and powers of oppression in the world and you will never, ever run out of material, because as the old saying goes–

Many a true word is spoken in jest.

So, always punch up because if you punch down, you’re nothing more than a bully–a tool–used to harm people who are targeted by abuse, and that’s never funny.
