Kenobi: A Star Wars Story (2020)
In hiding on
Tatooine, Obi-Wan Kenobi simultaneously avoids the sinister clutches of the Empire and watches over the young Luke Skywalker. Reduced to concealing his Jedi identity (keeping his use of the Force to an absolute minimum, and without using his lightsaber entirely) and carrying a blaster as a means of self-defence, Kenobi wanders the planet’s vast deserts and comes across a small community of farmers and peasants. Stopping to rest, the legendary Jedi soon discovers the town is under siege from a vile mercenary group of thieves, bandits, and rogues running out of the
Mos Eisley spaceport.
Wishing to remain in hiding but unable to ignore his inherent desire to help those in need, Obi-Wan strives to aid the villagers without using either his lightsaber or the Force. Despite his efforts, however, he is unable to repel the bandits using only his wits and blaster. Eventually realising that helping those in need comes before his own safety, Obi-Wan confronts the bandits in the centre of town – drawing his lightsaber for the first time since going into hiding, and – for the first time – truly striking fear into the hearts of the bandits.
The drawing of Kenobi’s lightsaber in the film’s climax would be the first time he uses it in the film, emerging from a cloud of smoke and dust to remind the galaxy what the Jedi once stood for. Starring Ewan McGregor.
