‘but it was democracy!’ they yell as over 1.5 million 16-17 year olds were denied the right to have a say in their own future

YES LETS GIVE BABIES A RIGHT TO VOTE SO YOU CAN MAKE THEM VOTE LIKE YOU WANT god this post is stupid

At 16 you can legally get married, move out, leave school, join the army, start working full time, pay tax and national insurance, buy lottery cards, consent to sexual relationships, change your name, and apply for welfare benefits. But you’re telling me the right to vote is too much of a stretch?

16 and 17 year olds are not ‘babies’. 16 and 17 year olds can literally live on their own and have a full time job. 16 and 17 year olds hold many responsibilities within society and the exclusion of them from the voting process is just not right.

‘So you can make them vote like you want’ I don’t really know what you’re trying to suggest here but if it’s the implication that 16-17 year olds can’t think for themselves then I’d like to refer you back to the first sentence again.

Many 16 and 17 year olds I know are much more politically active than members of the older generation because, contrary to popular belief, we do engage with issues in the outside world. When the Scottish referendum occured, there was a 75% 16-17 year old turnout (more than the voter turnout for the EU referendum amongst adults, I might add.)

These issues effect us too. We are aware of them, and most of us are active and vocal in our views. This is our future. Our voices and opinions shouldn’t be invalid simply because of our age.

You know what’s stupid? Telling 16 -17 year olds that their voices don’t matter until they turn 18 and not letting them have a say in their own goddamn future.
