I’ve been thinking a lot about post-war memorials in the Star Wars universe lately, but I’ve been hitting something a roadblock when it comes to location. What do y’all think: would the big memorials (like the Alderaanian memorial, various other genocide memorials, fallen soldier/missing soldier memorials, etc.) be located on Coruscant (or whatever the new capital was), or the home planet of the atrocity (or on New Alderaan, in the Alderaanian memorial’s case)?
Also, any thoughts on what memorials would have been built, either by individuals, planetary governments, or the New Republic government? And what would they even look like in the GFFA? (I have an idea for the Alderaanian memorial–big surprise–but I’m curious if other people have thought about/thoughts on this too.)
((Specifically gonna tag @actual-leia-organa, @chaseyesterdays, @phil-the-stone, @threadsketchy, and @1000-alshain, because I’m kind of guessing this kind of thing is gonna be up your alley (AND I MISS HEADCANONING WITH Y’ALL)–BUT, anyone who has thoughts, please please please, I’d love to hear them.))
i know that like Me Personally wouldn’t want a memorial that’s precious and specific to a certain planet/culture to be held in someplace as melting pottish as Coruscant, but that’s just me. Realistically, i think that some memorials would be held there, but certain Alderaanis would be discontent. I do think that maybe Important Locations, like, Yavin maybe, could also be used for memorial space, especially post-war. A commemoration of heroism and sacrifice, but also of loss and tragedy. Of moving forward, as it were, esp because they build new roots on Yavin (at least in my headcanon) so.
I think Leia especially would reluctantly agree to holding a memorial on Coruscant, but would jump on an opportunity to make it smaller and more precious rather than publicized and made into An Event, you know?
Also, I don’t know your own Alderaanian headcanons Super Well, but I like to imagine that prayers and hymns are sung in Alderaani and Leia goes up and sings one and at first she’s Okay but then halfway through she chokes up a little so Evaan starts singing with her and then all the survivors are singing together
yeah
In Canon of olde, the remains of Alderaan, the Graveyard, was where Alderaanians who had access to transport would go to pay their respects, often launching beacons and probes with holomessages that would play for visitors.
OH MY STARS THAT IS AWFUL AND HEARTBREAKING AND I AM NOW REALLY SAD.
(Tbh my only complaint with that would be that it wouldn’t be very accessible for a lot of people? And would probably be pretty expensive, even for those who could access…)
Ahhhhckkkk that’s. That’s heartbreaking though. And beautiful.
I would suspect that apart from the main official republic memorial where ever or whatever that might be there would also be other smaller memorials, other worlds for example that had a strong link or connection to Alderaan would have their own memorial in their own style,
I know after WWI in Australia lots of practical memorials where built, public access horse watering troughs in the town square with plaques on them, public swimming pools (memorial baths), and scout halls
somewhere like Naboo might have a great water-fountain dedicated to Alderaan’s memory in the middle of Theed
Oooooooh yeah. Yeah. I like that – and I hadn’t really thought of it either. But it makes a lot of sense, honestly. Not any huge things, like the one on New Alderaan or anything, but small memorials, like you said. Smaller things that are dedicated to Alderaan – or even other atrocities that affected their allies, or close neighbors, etc. – to remind their people.
(That also reminds me, for instance, of the small little WWI memorial across the street from my neighborhood in Kansas. It’s just like a corner of the street, with a statue and benches and a wall with some names or something carved in it. It’s nothing big, and nothing important, and nothing anyone but those of our community care about, but it’s still part of our city’s memory now, and part of our culture.)
So. So yeah.
(No yeah tiny things like that are really common in Australia, pretty much every every town no matter how small had some sort of memorial even if it was just a list of names on a plague in the church hall)
In one of the largest sdney train stations (I think Town hall or central) they have a series or large plaques that take up the wall of one of the hallways between platforms with the list of every name of any NSW rail employee that died in a war in the past century
The Senate houses May have large walls decorated as a memorial in one of the hallways.
Was the old Jedi Temple still around it could be used as some memorial museum
In New Canon, the Jedi Temple on Coruscant was turned into the Imperial Palace, Palpatine using the Council Chamber as a throne room. Presumably people like Mon Mothma would remember that it was once the Jedi Temple, but it’s most likely been turned into a memorial for the Jedi and Force Sensitives who were killed under Palpatine’s rule.
(Although it’s entirely possible that people would feel that turning the former Imperial Palace into a memorial for any of the Empire’s victims might be profane.)
