Jedi Apprentice: The Captive Temple
Like the last one, pretty much half the book was just Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan moping around, sad because they’re not on good terms with each other, all the while constantly worrying about each other’s safety.
Obi-Wan had taken a chance. No doubt about that. Qui-Gon’s steps faltered momentarily as he recalled how he felt when he arrived at the lake and realized that Obi-Wan was in the turbolift shaft. A deep sense of dread had pierced him. What if the shaft had broken free before the Masters had arrived? What if Obi-Wan had perished? Qui-Gon’s heart stopped at the thought.
His hurried pace resumed. He had learned much over the past weeks about how the heart could surprise you. He was beginning to realize just how intricate and deep the bonds were between him and his former Padawan.
And then there are the ducts acting as secret passages within the temple. It’s just asking for trouble. They narrowly avert Xanatos’ plans, but what do you know, wait a few years and you’ve got Cad Bane to deal with. And he succeeds.
Xanatos’ catch phrase should just be “I am here to ruin everything (again).”
I keep forgetting that the Jedi Temple is actually on Coruscant and that Coruscant is nothing but a giant city and that if you jump out a window you’ll just land on someone’s flying car.
Every time Obi-Wan is sad or lonely, all I can hear is “just you wait, just you wait” going through my head. Obi-Wan, buddy, this is just the beginning.
Obi-Wan leaves the Jedi, comes back, asks the council for forgiveness, gets put on probation, then immediately turns around and tells Qui-Gon he’ll go off and help in Qui-Gon’s (council unsanctioned) quest, even though that’ll probably just land him in even more hot water. Tiny Obi-Wan is precious.
