funereal-disease:

I’m so uncomfortable with the attitude that you’re supposed to carve yourself into discrete identities with no cognitive dissonance whatsoever. That you’re supposed to interpret threats to a certain part of your being as bearing no weight on the rest of you, because you’re not a person, after all – you’re a race and a gender and a sexuality and a disability status.

There’s this one blogger (who I generally like) who’s big on racial justice and ending police brutality…and is also big on “kill all men”. Fuck, what are men of color supposed to get out of that? “I want to save you from being killed by police, but I also want you dead for other reasons.” I get that “kill all men” is supposed to be hyperbole, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t add to the pile of threats that certain populations of men experience just by existing. Imagine being queer and hearing “kill all men” come out of the mouths of people who ostensibly want to save you from gay-bashings.

Real people are not lists of identities you can pick and choose from. Support the whole person or don’t claim to support them at all.
