I was in fact in this Primark store at the same time this happened (that’s where I got my flower crown!), and can confirm this is almost certainly true: all the time I was there, there were announcements on the tannoy that sounded a little off – “can all second floor staff go to meeting room” and the like. Apparently Primark are working with the police to try and solve this, but it’s pretty shocking all the same.
It was, in fact, a complete lie on the part of the mother! Sigh.
