Why don’t wheelchairs have pedals for when your arms get tired?

b/c your legs don’t fucking work what is this

Actually many, many people who use wheel chairs have some use of their legs. They may be in chairs because of horrible balance issues that can cause them to easily fall over, hip, knee, or back problems, the list goes on. And while these people can get around by sort of “walking” in the chair, I can see how a concept like pedals might be useful, though I don’t know for sure because I’m not in one myself.

a good response! im a wheelchair user who often can’t walk, but sometimes i use wheelchairs to rest, or on journeys when i want to save my energy for later instead of using it up walking!

pedals would actually help me to switch between using my hands and feet so i could rest the other limbs

the same can be said for many others too, they can walk some of the time and could use pedals and would find them helpful

the idea that no wheelchair users can walk is a harmful and very incorrect idea that so many people have internalised

it causes people to start judging what disabilities are ‘real’ or ‘fake’, even if they’re abled and it’s none of their business!

princecharmingtobe is the first non wheelchair user who’s actually added something good to this post, unlike all these abled people acting like its their place to speak on behalf of wheelchair users

All the clearly ableds reblogging the version of this with just the first two comments pisses me off so monumentally. Listen. Learn. Stop with your assholery in mocking just because you’re ignorant and can’t comprehend that wheelchair users are a diverse group.

My mother was a part time wheelchair user. Pedals wouldn’t have helped her, but not everyone who is in a wheelchair is a quadriplegic or otherwise has non-functioning legs.
