in a way there’s this really essentialist culture like if a movie ain’t a masterpiece then it’s not worthwhile and that’s so reductive and terrible re: appreciating all the minutiae of art
sometimes a movie is whatever but a performance is wonderful. sometimes the performances are whatever but the story is important. sometimes the story is lacking but the direction is effective, brings something new to the table
you gotta watch movies and see all their different moving parts and be able to appreciate when certain parts are great, are sometimes fucking amazing, even if the whole isn’t something to take home
this all or nothing bullshit is worthless when it comes to movies, when it comes to any kind of art. sometimes a movie is less than the sum of its parts so you have to look to the parts to see something worth your time
so many of my favorite movies aren’t my favorite movies because they’re masterpieces that stop my breath they’re my favorite movies because of a moment, because of one element of the movie, because i saw the movie at the right time in my life, because a part of it planted a thought in me that i couldn’t shake
