Everyone mocking that post about men’s body standards – yeah, I’m not sure I understand how that happened, but I don’t really want to. It wasn’t a well-written post, and looked to be more like someone venting than anything else, but, they had a right to vent about that particular issue without being mocked? If it had been a ‘listen up you fucking feminists, let me tell you how much worse men have it’ post, that would have been different, but as it stands it’s just someone complaining that men also have unrealistic standards to live up to. Which is true-
-because all ideas of what people are ‘supposed’ to look like are based on ideas that we should never accept nomally: ableism, classism, anti-fat prejudice (which has some roots in ableism…) – and racism too, of course, although that could be a whole post on its own, how people’s attractiveness in the society we’re operating in is usually based on how close to ‘white’ they are. But even at the incredibly basic level we’re working at here, yeah, men do have an unrealistic body image to live up to. They don’t have it as bad as women –
-but the reason why men might be uncomfortable with their bodies ‘all the time’ is probably because of the various ideas and standards imposed by patriarchy, capitalism (gotta sell those gym memberships, after all), and the toxic masculinity/misogyny that says “Feeling unattractive or ugly is for girls! Real men don’t worry about that stuff.” Surely there’s more to do there than edit in loltastic pictures of the Grinch.
