i’ve talked about this before, but another problem i see on tumblr is very dualistic thinking – either art/pop culture is progressive or it’s oppressive when usually, as bell hooks puts it, media is mixed a lot of the time the people and things tumblr SJ praise have problems and sometimes, the things they condemn have positive aspects as well as negative ones
i’m not saying everything is in some ambiguous in-between space or that we can’t ever make value judgements on whether something is over-all progressive or oppressive, but i’m just saying that not everything neatly fits that dichotomy and too often i see people dismissing problems with art/pop culture they deem progressive and important/positive aspects of what they deem oppressive
