A legitimate suggestion re: the image sizing issue

I don’t think tumblr is going to listen to graphic makers and artists about what a problem the new image sizes are. They’ve undone literally years of work for some people and basically invalidated a fun hobby for others. The new image sizes not only make no sense (wtf is with that stray 1px line on the end?!) but they don’t work in terms of image quality anyway. It’s a huge, huge kick in the face to artists on tumblr. Hell, it’s a huge kick in the face to pretty much anyone on tumblr!

This suggesion probably isn’t going to work unless other people help me find potential problems and holes in it, but my idea so far-

Well, social media (including Tumblr, naturally) is a massive tool for companies these days. BBC America has a official presence on here – doctorwho, orphanblack, many others – NBC has a blog for Hannibal – etc etc. They reblog gifsets, artwork etc from fans not just because it’s a quick and fun way to interact with their fanbase, but because it gives them free advertising. Blogs that exist on tumblr purely because there is a large, creative fanbase here suddenly having much fewer gifs, art, graphics etc to reblog – okay, I’m not going to kid myself into thinking it would affect anything in a big way, but it might affect things a little.

My suggestion is: if one of your gifsets/artworks etc is reblogged by a blog you know to be an affiliate of a big company – message them, if you can, and tell them you don’t wish to have your artwork displayed on their blog in the current blurry state it’s in and would they mind taking it down. Chances are, they won’t listen (or take it down), but if they get a lot of those messages-

[Obviously should you send a message, for god’s sake be polite, and remember there’s a person on the other end.]

-they might think, hey, there’s something going on here.

There’s the old adage that if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product, and most of the major fanartists and graphic makers on this site have been the product at some point. By being here and interacting with creators, companies etc we’ve agreed to that – but we should get a say in how our artwork is used. Without gifs, artwork etc blogs like doctorwho or nbchannibal simply wouldn’t exist the way they do, so if people start to jump ship to other websites, or simply stop posting art or gifs on tumblr, they’ll ultimately take a hit. I think that telling them – the people using tumblr primarily to make money – that we’re unhappy couldn’t hurt.
