I can never decide whether it’s amazing to identify with Grantaire simply because I’ve never found any other fictional character that I identified so strongly so that’s kind of crazy or if it’s shit because, well, Grantaire’s not the most happy or put-together person and neither am I and that’s just not great either.

The way I look at it is, Grantaire’s story is about how people who aren’t happy or put-together can still be brave and loving and heroic and important. (There was even a thread a while back where someone translated some old old notes of Victor Hugo’s, and Grantaire’s story ended with “Grantaire, happy and heroic”…) So I think it is absolutely 100% amazing to identify with him, because everyone’s got a Long live the Republic! I am one of them! inside them somewhere, even if they don’t know it.
