I do sometimes wonder what would have happened to Grantaire had Enjolras become involved with someone else. Fandom consensus seems to be that he’d instantly drink himself to death, and maybe he would, but…
…another part of me likes to think that he would have been okay in the end, that he’d have become ‘someone once more’ on his own given time and support. And then eventually he’d mature into the sort of man Enjolras could respect, just not love, but that would be enough for him.
