Ah yes surely you want to hear about Les Mis
IT WAS REALLY GOOD. Even from the row fourth from the back. EVERYONE SANG SO WELL AND ACTED SO WELL AND I REALLY LOVED IT, I wanna go round again
Little(/big) details I loved:
-The revolving stage, I’ve never seen one in action before, it was used very effectively (although since I was sitting right at the back occasionally I could see people getting up on the other side when they were supposed to be dead? I could see Christopher Jacobsen climbing around to get in the Dead Enjolras position, ahahaha.)
-Eponine’s death/ALFOR I actually liked more than the film version (sorry Sam Barks, you were great too). Just you got more of a feeling here that poor Eponine was in actual pain and she was just gasping out her last words for Marius’s sake.
-Also for both Eponine’s death and Fantine’s they did this thing with the lights where they slowly got really bright and that was very good (and yes, very sad, woe.) They didn’t do it with Valjean though, dunno why…
-Javert’s sucide was also very well done, they had the lights make a water effect on the floor which faded out soon as he hit it.
-Gavroche was perfect (Where do they keep finding all these incredibly talented child actors to play Gavroches?) and when he got shot the first time it was so loud and unexpected that pretty much everyone in the theatre jumped. So, ouch.
-Oh yes and you know how at the end of most Les Mis shows the main characters run out in pairs to take their bows? (Eponine and Fantine usually run out together, for example) This time Enjolras and Gavroche ran out together and they were all smiley and saluted each other and it was actually ADORABLE
-Adam Linstead already made this very funny and Grantaire-esque video, so I should have guessed he’d be really good and yes he was. He’s either cheerful drunk or surly drunk throughout all his scenes right up until after his Drink With Me verse, after which he just collapses on Enjolras and they remain hugging/face-touching for rather a long time. Wibble.
-Then during the final battle the two of them are standing over Marius and they look at each other and Grantaire offers his hand and Enjolras takes it and they run up the barricade together, which may very well have been a nod to Orestes Fasting And Pylades Drunk. Ahahaha. *sob*
-Also there were two (two!) moments between Grantaire and Eponine, which is always good seeing as they’re Thematically Linked in the book. Firstly, when Eponine returns from finding Cosette’s house during DYHTPS she grabs Grantaire to go get Marius for her. And then later he’s the first one to walk in on her death scene and he seems pretty sad about it.
-Ooh, there was also a very brief moment between Cosette and Eponine, just after the Attack On Rue Plumet I think, where they’re standing on opposite sides of the gate and they each sort of give a nervy little curtsey to the other. (Did Cosette recognise her at that point, I like to think maybe she did, cos the lack of interaction between them in all versions of the story makes me a little curious/sad…)
-…I think that’s actually it? But oh it was so very good.
