Thoughts on ‘Smillian’/RPF in general

(Because of stuff on Tumblr, and a conversation I was having earlier. Also posted at my tumblr…)

I’m getting more and more uncomfortable with Smillian/RPF in general by the day. I know a lot of Smillian-ers are kids, but some of them act downright entitled– bashing Daisy Lowe, bashing Andrew Brooke (that guy Karen snogged in Spain), saying Arthur’s ‘cockblocking’ Matt/Karen, etc… it’s really put me off. Matt and Karen aren’t characters, they’re people– if at some point they get together and there’s an official announcement, great! If not…it’s none of our business.

I know I’ve joked about Alex/Arthur in the past, but I even sort of regret that now. I guess it’s fine when you’re not taking it seriously, but: the Doctor Who cast aren’t toys and we don’t own them. Maybe Matt geniunely, really doesn’t like Karen that way– he’s known her for three years and there’s nothing stopping them from dating, after all. Heck, the production team would probably welcome it, extra publicity!

Actors often seem to bind together a lot faster and deeper than a lot of ‘regular’ friendships do…David Tennant and Billie Piper had a similar sort of relationship and now they’re both happily married to other people. Matt’s already kissed Jenna (and not acting!). Actors are usually just more touchy-feely, I guess, I honestly don’t think the Matt/Karen ‘fondling’ and so on really means anything, anymore than Matt kissing Jenna or Alex does.

tl;dr = We don’t own these people and we shouldn’t go all tabloid-y on them, it’s not nice. I know if I were Karen, and I was in a relationship, and I constantly saw people saying I should be with my best friend, or clearly preferred my best friend to whoever I was with and just didn’t realise it…it’d make me pretty uncomfortable. And cross.
