I always wondered what became of Mickey’s mother. She was obviously alive at the start of Season One (Rose mentions her), but yet in Season Two Mickey’s happy to be in a different universe to her.
So it’s my headcanon that she actually died, somewhere between The Christmas Invasion and New Earth – and Mickey didn’t tell this to Rose.

I can see that. My headcanon is that he’s only seen her once since his childhood, at his gran’s funeral – his mum tried to make a connection but Mickey, grieving and guilty, unleashed years of anger over her walking out when he was little. Rose tried to talk him round, as she did with Tommy at the end of The Idiot’s Lantern, but nothing got resolved before they ended up in the other universe. Now that he’s back, and older, and married, and has maybe met the alternate version of his mum, he’s ready to build bridges with her (and maybe his dad, too).

Yeah, that thing with The Idiot’s Lantern always annoyed me, like he’s a giant asshole but you should keep in contact because “he’s your dad” as though parental genetics trump everything else. It doesn’t. When a parent decides they don’t want to be around you or have a meaningful relationship, you don’t just suddenly decide that you love them anyway. The best you can usually hope for is to decided to not let them hurt you anymore. Mickey had his Gran. She loved him. I think he wrote off his actual parents. They didn’t count to him anymore. However, I do like the idea of his meeting the alternate versions.

Oh, sure, it annoyed me for exactly the same reasons, but if Rose reacts like that to a stranger (who also has a loving mum and whose dad was obviously a colossal dick) I think she’d be far more strongly on the “you must forgive your parents no matter what” bandwagon when it’s someone she loves and who’s just lost his only close family.

Ooh, I like that idea. :D Fuel for fanfic, maybe?
