I hate apostrophies. Apostrophies are to my English skills what roundabouts are to my driving skills.
Which one of these is right?
…humankind, in all it’s good and it’s wickedness, remains essentially the same.
…humankind, in all its good and its wickedness, remians essentially the same.
Because they both look right to me. *squints* (Line is the last line of a fanfic, btw.)
…and this is probably wrong too…
Bah.

I think the second one is right, but don’t quote me on that!

The second one is right. Let me try to explain the rule here: Possessive pronouns do not have apostrophes. They are: His, Hers, Its, Theirs, Ours. To tell when to put an apostrophe in (whether it should be it’s or its), expand the word out to it is. If that fits, there should be an apostrophe there, if it doesn’t, there shouldn’t. So which sounds right? humankind, in all it is good and it is wickedness, remains essentially the same. or humankind, in all its good and its wickedness, remains essentially the same.

Oh yeah- the it is rule. I’m sure I knew that…*slaps own wrist* Thanks for the advice- I’ve clearly got some editing to do. :D

Second one’s right, Sarah. ^_^ You’ve no need for the apostrophes in the first sentence because there are no letters missing (your “it’s” isn’t short for “it is”). *feels geeky*
