Thoughts on a second ROTS viewing
Yes, I know, but I’ve never seen a movie more than twice in a theatre. I might manage a third viewing, but I’m not sure…
Palpatine’s transformation…I thought it was funny at first (he sounds like he’s doing a Gollum impression) but now it just comes off as horrific. Which I assume was what they were going for. ;) It’s just one of things you almost want to look away from…
One bit I like which I haven’t seen many people point out: Anakin jumping back in the lift and Obi-Wan almost attacking him before he realises who it is. Nice bit of foreshadowing – next time he pulls a lightsabre on him, it’ll be to kill him.
I still love Order 66 (well, in a sense), the Anakin-and-Padme-staring-at-each-other-across-Coruscant scene (that has to have a name…) and Obi-Wan’s ‘I will do what I must’ :( The attack on the Temple still depresses me.
I wonder if Obi-Wan actually suspected it was Anakin, if it was lurking in the back of his mind and he was waiting for (and praying he wouldn’t get) confirmation. Maybe when Anakin’s body was nowhere to be found among the others in the Temple…
And later, when Obi-Wan starts talking to Padme about Anakin killing younglings, he sort of puts his hand over his mouth, and I can’t help wondering if he was stopping himself being sick. (Actually, he seems to put his hand over his mouth a lot in this movie…maybe it’s what he does when he’s under stress.)
On The Death Scene: my twelve-year-old brother said ‘She must be feeling his pain’ (By the way, was that Luke’s heartbeat heard when Vader is being made, or Padme’s?) And I think Vader’s NOOOOO works…it’s supposed to sound like a genuine cry of grief (which it is) but it sounds wrong coming from the machine he is, and that’s how he’ll sound for almost the rest of his life.
Oh, and I also love the ‘Destroyers!’ bit which parallels TPM so nicely. Not many people have mentioned that one, either, and it is easy to miss but it’s cool. :)
Speaking of ROTS-TPM parallels, here’s my favourite, though I don’t know if it was intentional:

Creepy, huh? (Screencap by spitefairy, by the way.)

I know the song they play there is Padme’s Ruminations (the gazing across Courescant scene). Maybe the scene is called that as well? Probably not though. Creepy parallel! Qui Gonn is like “Obi-Wan I will stroooooke you!” I think Obi was just stroking his beard when he was talking to Padme. I think it’s his nervous quirk. Do you mean when Ani turns around and says “Destroyers” and they battle them off? Because I noticed that was similar to TPM. YES. The NOOOO still doesn’t work for me. The second time I saw the movie I saw it with a silly friend and kind of laughed during a lot of it, but several times I had to say SHH JUST WATCH THIS IS SO SAD. But we were laughing during Palpatine vs Mace Windu @ Palpy’s crazy voices, and at Padme/Ani’s bad dialogue, and at Vader’s nnnoooo, and at a few other spots.

Yay, I’ve just seen it a third time! I almost find it ‘touching’ (no pun intended) when Sidious goes to Anakin like that at the end and puts a hand to his face. It’s kinda fatherly. And I couldn’t help but feel that there’s a parallel within the film itself between Dooku’s death scene and Palpy’s near-death scene, as regards how each Sith in turn is regarded as “too dangerous to be kept alive”, except that Ani’ kills Dook’ the first time, then saves the Sith Lord the second. I also cared more about Anakin this time – I’ve never got in touch with him as much as I did today. :) And I was physically shaking when Ani’ went to kill the Younglings… it’s so horrific.
