one of my biggest takeaways from rogue one is that I loved how surly and selfish and initially unlikeable jyn erso was. and I bet if she was a dude, 95% of the fandom would agree with me.
#I mean you know there’d be 5 million posts about how she’s gruff and emotionally walled off#but ‘soft’ deep down lmao#and how she calls everyone ‘my friends’ after saw’s rebels attack them#and says they need to be protected bc saw knows her#even though she’s only known them for like 5 minutes#she leaps in front of k2s0 to protect him from baze as well#and latches onto cassian immediately when he decides to trust her with his blaster#bc just like him she desperately wants to connect with someone and to have someone invest in her that way#is an entirely foreign feeling#but one she desperately needs to feel#although tbh I liked her from the beginning#I like characters that are complicated and have layers#and guess who else was selfish initially#han solo – and we’re never even told why#with jyn we know exactly why#even luke’s entire storyline is focused on protecting those around him rather than fighting for a general cause#he was pretty pissed when he found out he was being trained to kill his father too ( @priscillajeanohare )
#it seems weird to me #that ur all in love w han who was selfish and only decided to fight for himself #i mean with jyn we can see her horror and reasoning since she was a little girl #but ppl are like um yeah dont care #shes got so much more backstory than most of the fem characters we get in sw
#she was complicated as hell #unlikeable at times yeah #developed a hell of a lot #she ended up dYING for the rebellion y’all #she was finally on par with the dude characters we love no matter what #and ppl are bitching lol ok (via @stripperanakin)
rogue one
Rogue One had very few women, with only Jyn, Lyra, and Mon Mothma getting a full page spread in the visual guide. I wanted to compile all of the other women in the book so that the fandom can include them in their art and fanfiction. As it turns out, other than the aforementioned three, there are 14 women (too many for this post, but also way too few for a movie…), so check out the Imgur album for more information and photos about them.
Also…I just want to point out that Jaldine Gerams (played by the amazing Geraldine James from Utopia, btw) has the same callsign as Jessika Pava, which makes me very happy.
So Lu and I went to watch Rogue One again today, and sitting in the row in front of us was this lesbian couple and their two sons. The younger son, who looked about 6 or 7 (although obviously it was pretty dark so I couldn’t be sure), talked throughout the entire film, and usually this would be annoying, right? Not this little guy. He was such a huge Star Wars nerd. He kept explaining things to his mum so that she’d understand what was going on, and it was so sweet??
(By the by, RO spoilers ahead)
He’d be like “That’s the Death Star. That’s important, remember that.” Or “That’s Tarkin!!! He’s a baddy.” But he also had the greatest reactions to things, like when the rebels all agreed to fly to Scarif he shouted “THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER” and he actually fist pumped the air when C-3PO and R2 had their cameo. Like all kids, though, there were a few things that went over his head and he would loudly ask if one of his mothers would explain what was going on. My favourite of these moments was when he asked if Baze was sad about Chirrut’s death because Chirrut was his boyfriend.
But I think my overall favourite point was when Krennic flew into Mustafar, and upon seeing the familiar streams of lava this boy leaned over and said to his mum: “This is where Anakin Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi had a fight because Anakin had gone to the dark side, and Obi-wan Kenobi said he loved Anakin but Anakin didn’t say it back so he chopped all his legs off.”
Like, you’re not wrong, kid.
On the way out of the cinema I could still hear him babbling excitedly about Princess Leia and how cool he thought she was, and how he wanted to watch A New Hope when they got home, and how much he’d loved the film. It was so sweet. I enjoyed the film ten times more than I would have done if that boy hadn’t been there, I’m sure. Honestly, god bless that gay Star Wars family.
